Winter Forecast

I just read an awful forecast for winter from a professional forecaster in the energy market. He is forecasting a warm winter of +3 to +7 temperatures for Indiana. Now I have to figure out what this does for our snow chances.

FIRST FANTASY SNOW SPOTTED

The GFS is a long range computer model. Usually anything more than 3 to 5 days is considered a fantasy and then is especially true when it comes to snow. Today the GFS is showing some LES (Lake Effect Snow) for upstate New York in a couple of weeks.

We know it is too warm and highly unlikely but seeing the first "fantasy snow" on a computer model sure gets one excited for winter. :)

Excellent Weather

Last week was great weather and this weeks looks to be just as good but slightly warmer. It is officially fall and cooler nights are here.

Some of the winter outlooks are slowly being revealed by many professional meteorologists. The first couple look interesting and cold. :)

Spared So Far...

The severe weather and the significant rain has spared our area of the state today. Areas to our northwest and north have seen a lot of rain. Chicago has set an all time single day rain total with nearly 7 inches in spots. The rain is still coming down for them. A few isolated tornadoes have been reported in Michigan and just south if the Michigan and Indiana border.

I do see a couple of isolated thunderstorms in south central Illinois that could rake across our area if they manage to hold together.

Severe Weather Possible Today/Evening

The severe weather parameters look somewhat promising for the northern 1/3 of the state. My best guess right now would be Valpo to Monon to Lima, OH to Toledo, OH. It will be something worth watching.

RAIN, HURRICANE IKE, & MORE RAIN...

There is a huge swath of rain covering the country. Between a stalled cold front and Ike bring tropical moisture our way, there is potential for 5 inches, maybe more by Tuesday.

Hurricane Ike & Indiana...

Hurricane Ike is making a beeline to Texas with evacuations order for Galveston areas. On Monday it look likes the remnants of Ike could have some lingering effects over our area. Ike is very large in size so it would seem likely we will be effected even with some shifts in its track.

Hurricane Photos

NASA has some really incredible photos of hurricanes that are worth a look.

Severe Weather Approaching

It looks like some moderately severe thunderstorms will be coming this way. A warning is to our southwest moving this way. Small pea sized hail been reported along with cloud to ground lighting.

10:30 Edit: Of course I write about it and it all fizzles out.

Thunderstorms Overnight

A Thunderstorm Watch along with numerous warnings are moving across Illinois into Indiana. The severe weather looks to be staying south of our area but we can expect a some non severe thunderstorms shortly lasting past midnight. More to come if something pops out our way.

Cooler Weather Starting Off This Week...

After a cool/wet weekend it looks like more of the same. Monday night will see showers followed by a cool Tuesday. Tuesday might not break 70. It looks quiet for us the rest of the week.

Hurricane Ike looks to be making a path for Texas or Louisiana around the end of the week or next weekend. It should be stronger than Gustav but the next few days will determine what happens to its strength while over Cuba.

Yea! It's Raining...

With the exception of some rain fade on the DirecTV Satellite, I couldn't be happier that it is raining. (I guess watching a Dirty Harry movie for the 100th time wasn't in the cards.) We have received 9/10" already and I suspect we will top one inch before the rain tapers off.

Tomorrow could see us on the eastern edge of a cold front and the left overs of Hurricane Gustav. The SPC has us near the slight risk area for severe weather. I would expect active weather to begin around the dinner hour.

Gustav...

Gustav is not the "storm of the century" as some as predicted (or even hoped). It is bring rain and wind and some flooding but not what was feared by many. If you have DirecTV, you can watch local coverage on channel 361. There also is a 4 channel stream available online - http://www.maroonspoon.com/wx/gustav.html

Gustav should bring some impact to our local weather in the middle to end of the week. A cold front will bring an end to the heat and if that can collide with remnants of Gustav, some stormy weather could happen for our community.

Otherwise expect a few days of hot weather before we see some relief.
