It's been hot but not really...

This is going to sound crazy but it really has not been all that hot in Kokomo.  I say hot as above 90 degrees.  Only for a briefly around 2:45 on the afternoon of May 30th did we reach exactly 90.  Never higher and never in June.  However even without the extreme highs, the overall pattern have been warm.

May was +2 to +4 degrees above normal and  June has been +4 to +6 degrees above normal.

Rather Quiet Sunday and Some Advice...

It has been rather quiet today around Howard County.  A few strong storms moved across the area to the north just grazing the county but nothing approaching severe limits.  Other part of the state and region did see some severe weather.  Some late night showers could bring a small amount of rain but not much.

I do have some advice for the week...

Play hooky from work a few days.  After what has been a mostly miserable month with a mix of heat, humidity, and severe weather it will finish with some great weather.  So with my permission, take a few days off work and enjoy...

Storms & Rain Return

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms will bring strong to severe weather for much is Indiana.  Also in the forecast is heavy rain fall potential.  Another inch or possible more is likely by Monday morning.  Sign up for my twitter account or watch the stream on the right for nowcasting today.  I will be mobile for much of the day.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Taking a Break...

Time to take a break from the parade of storms and rain and enjoy a couple of days of hot and sunny weather.  The weekend should start off fine but rain and thunderstorms look to return by Saturday night.  Too early to tell what exactly the implications might be for rainfall totals and the severity but any amount of rain is not good at this point.  We have 7.52 inches at my house for the month.  No more please.  For now, have a great day (or two) and we will deal with the weekend weather later...

[Update: 3:45 PM] Severe Weather for Wednesday & Wednesday Night...

I know many of the recent severe weather events have busted bad.  Today could be another bust but I see significant reasons to be concerned about the tornado potential for this afternoon and evening.  I encourage everyone to be alert today for rapidly changing conditions.

Update: looks like the better timing with be after the dinner hour.  I plan to attend both Major League championship semi final games tonight.  It is to watch the game and to be nearby should something pop up.  I should be on twitter with my cell phone to provide updates.  They stream just to the left (or can be found on the link above).

More of the same this morning...

When is this rain going to stop?  Maybe we dry out on Friday but not this morning...

Crazy Night & Frustration...

What a night...

I was out at the Northwestern Main Campus at 350 N & 400 W photographing the Softball and Minor League Championships.  Only the 5:30 Softball game was completed.  The Softball and Minor League Championship games which started at 7 PM were suspended.  I was photographing the games and that kept me from closely following the incoming weather.

I personally found that frustrating.  I tried to follow the info with my Motorola Droid and with my amateur radio hand-held radio but it is difficult to do both well and I focused on the photography.

I also was frustrated and confused as were many of you by the early warning issued for Howard County.  I don't know what exactly happened but I am pretty sure the first warning expired even before the system hit the warning area.  While I understand this looked potentially ugly/serious, I don't think the first warning was warranted.  I would bet there was some mistake at the NWS.

My frustration didn't end there.  The tournament staff at Northwestern monitored the weather and halted game play and moved everyone indoors to the High School before the weather arrived.  Good job!

It was a different story at the Relay for Life at Kokomo High School.  I was not on site and cannot provide exact details but I do know that a long time and respected Skywarn Spotter went over to the event well in advance to give them a heads up to the situation.  They appeared to have given no forethought to severe weather plans and were not responsive to the information provided by the Skywarn Spotter.  I could hear his frustration on my amateur radio.

The frustration rose even more when he indicated they were just casually mentioning some rain was heading their way.  At that point I was reporting 40-50 MPH winds at Northwestern and yet they did nothing.  They exercised very poor judgment and ultimately when they realized how severe the weather was, it was too late.  From a couple of different accounts it seems almost all of the smaller/personal tents/canopies blew over and stuff blew all over the place.  I know EMA was out on scene to assess the damage and make sure they understand that more was heading in later tonight.

If you have any outdoor event, you must account for the weather and monitor forecasts and be proactive when severe weather threatens.  You cannot take personal safety lightly.

As for damage, there were a few trees and limbs down around the area.  A 2.5' to 3' tree was down on the east side.  I drove upon this at 880W and Hwy 22...

A second round is heading this way.  We will have to see how it holds up.

SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER FOR KOKOMO, IN

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for severe weather today.
There is a 15% chance for significant hail.
There is a 15% chance for damaging wind.

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Warm & Twitter...

It is warm today but not unbearable given the low humidity levels.  That is a good thing.  Friday will be the start of the heat wave which will bring near 90+ degree temperatures through the middle of next week.  Heat indexes will also be very high.  People working outdoors should use caution and drink plenty of fluids and of course use sun screen.

Severe weather also will return Friday evening with an increased threat for Saturday.  Not expecting any widespread outbreak but isolated pop up thunderstorms could disrupt outdoor activities.

Twitter & Weather...

There are a lot of professional and hobby forecasters on twitter offering detailed play by play of the weather.  This can be particularly helpful during severe weather.  For me, I generally try to keep my twitter forecasts for the Kokomo and Howard County and include the surrounding counties.  Some others have a much broader scope.

My best suggestion is to search for the #INwx hashtag. http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23inwx

If you follow people on twitter, besides me, try Nicole Misencik @NicoleWTHR, Paul Poteet @PaulPoteet, and Ryan Greggory @RyanGreggory who is studying meteorology at Ball State University and is on WWKI in the evenings and during severe weather.

HoosierWxAlert @HoosierWxALERT offers automated watches and warning for the state of Indiana.  Sometimes it can be a bit busy but is a great way to keep informed.

There are many other fine forecasters around Indiana and if you do the first thing mentioned (#INwx) you will find them and select the ones which you enjoy the most.

Enjoy Thursday...

Take a few minutes to enjoy Thursday before we start creeping back up with oppressive heat and humidity.  Late on Friday severe weather makes its return with an increased threat on Saturday and Sunday.  Of course more rain will accompany the severe weather too like we need more.  We are already ahead of our May total rainfall and look to be on track for a top 10 June.  Ugh...

Tuesday Forecast: Rain & Storms...

Yep, more of the same.  Some funnel clouds spotted around the state and maybe even one on the Clinton/Howard county line.  Lots of rain and while it doesn't seem like it, we have been on the lower end of the totals.  We have 4.5"+ currently and that was our total for all of May.

Friday could be another busy severe weather day.

SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER FOR KOKOMO, IN

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for severe weather today.
There is a 5% chance for significant hail.
There is a 30% chance for damaging wind.

Slight Risk For Severe Weather

The slight risk continues for Monday and Tuesday for severe weather.  The pattern producing severe weather continues across the Ohio Valley.  The tornado threat is low while wind damage is much greater.  Already saturated ground will also pose problems for additional rain expected to fall.  Some flash flooding is possible where the heaviest rain falls.

It will be a difficult week for the Minor League Championships with rain/thunderstorms forecast for each day.  Field conditions are already poor with water and mud.  Good luck to the teams still playing.

Weekend Rain & Storms

It looks like a soggy weekend with heavy rain potential and some possible thunderstorms.  A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Saturday morning.  Long term continues to look wet and this will be a difficult week for the baseball and softball  tournaments.

Tuesday...

I'm really not excited at all today for the severe weather.  Things look rather marginal at best and will come late after a day with minimal heating.  Rain and minor flooding will be the bigger concerns.

SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER FOR KOKOMO, IN

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK for severe weather today.
There is a 2% chance for tornadoes.
There is a 15% chance for signficant hail.

Sunday Morning Follow Up

As you may have heard, yesterday's severe weather threat did finally come to fruition in Carroll, Miami, and Cass counties with one or more tornadoes touchdowns in the overnight darkness.  Storms at night while most people sleep are one of several great reasons to own a NOAA Weather Radio.  If you slept through it and were unaware, just think about the what if that had hit my home?

For Howard County, the big overnight news was the 2 inches of rain which fell in an hour on top of already saturated ground.   This upcoming week should bring more severe weather chances and rain.  However you can enjoy this day as it should be quiet and cool.

Important Weather Radio Information: The transmitter for the NOAA weather radio which servers our area is currently on low power and has a hum in the audio.  While I am sure repairs will be made quickly, it in current state, home weather stations might not be activated during severe weather.  I sure you to check your radio for reception a couple of times each day to make sure you know if it is not able to pick up the weakened signal.
